Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you get to enjoy it with your families and friends and loved ones.

Hair Down

So it's official. I'm gonna be graduating from college. I can't really feel the excitement yet cause everything felt like it was on super speed the last couple of weeks with all the deadlines and all. It's only just starting to sink in really slowly to me now that we're on Christmas break.

I'm gonna miss..

My allowance =(

Anyway, this is what I look like 5 minutes before entering the school still looking all sleepy and haggard, and before tying my hair.  Fortunately, only a few very unlucky people see me looking like this in real life. Haha.

Notebook Sketches

I was watching Way of The Dragon earlier today and this one dude, who's only an extra, caught my attention cause he looked like a real life 70's guy caricature. Haha. I haven't seen a legit 70's film in a long time so it was pretty interesting, not to mention Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in one action movie. Now that's epic right there.

(from left to right: the evil rich white man behind everything, the irritating kiss ass, and some other extra dude)

I've got much to learn about shapes.

This other drawing is from an old woman who sat beside me yesterday on the jeepney while going home. She looked really interesting and she seemed like a nice person. I did a little memory sketch of her when i got back home. I really like this one.

Notice the nice little ribbon on her headband.

VSFS 2011

Will probably be doing more of these since i got to do a lot of drawings while watching the show. Hopefully if spare time permits, i'll digitally cleanup and color them too. Talk about "figure" drawing..

Journals

I'm trying to catch up on my blog updates!

These are a compilation of some paintings taken different pages from my notebook that already got to fill up. I didn't get to scan them until now so i'll just upload them all here in one post. Most of them were done on different days, although i don't think i got to write the dates on all of them. Enjoy!

Doodles from last term's terribly long and slow course adjustment line.

Thumbnail paintings from lorelay bove's iluustrations for princess and the frog. She's the awesomest.

Annnnd the last one's a little painting from a christian doir design. The scribbles on the bottom are from alexandre heboyan, who i just realised is also french, like dior, so this page just seems fitting. haha.

Gobelins

Gobelins L'Ecole de L'Image
went to our school to have a three day animation masterclass. So yup! We're having the awesomest time. These are some sketches I did a while ago of Alexandre Heboyan, our speaker (worked on Kung Fu Panda, Monster's vs Aliens), from during the seminar. Day 3 is coming up & I'm really excited! I'll post the rest of my notes here after everything's done.

(the drawings below are from day 3)

Day 3

I've got a million things going on in my head right now. I am overloading with animation juices. This whole day was 100% pure animation day. In the morning there was the masterclass, it was awesome. In the afternoon I met up with two of my friends to consult with and share ideas about our senior short films. It was pretty good too. And at around 9 pm when I was just about to go home, I bumped into my professors, and Alex was there with them! I said hi and told them I was already on my way home, but then he was like,
"no! you're coming with us!"

And so we hung out.

Like Po and the Furious Five.

 Skadoosh!

(And now here are my notes, as promised.)

Color Experiment

I haven't been posting anything in a while, and yes, i noticed too that i have been saying that a lot in the past few of posts. And i've been promising to post more stuff, but what can i do.. Anyway i finally finally have a new laptop now and that should mean i'll be working more and posting more.

So,

Was playing with this new style a couple of minutes ago, i think i sort of kind of got the feel of it, more or less. I think. This is the rough study i did to explore the approach.

On Lines

I don't usually like to post stuff like these, cause know i got so much stuff to learn too, but i thought it might be helpful to some people who might be reading this. If anything, this is just a note to myself.

(note: originally when i wrote this i planned on writing about lines, values & texture, but then i realised that i really don't know anything about texture, and i only know little about values, so all i'll write about for now is Lines, just so i don't have to pretend about anything.)

Lines are the most basic element of drawing. To me, lines represent the most basic "information" about an illustration. Lines are like the words you need to formulate a message*. You build the right words around each other so that you can deliver a thought.

A really good draftsman knows exactly where to put which lines where, so that they can get the complete thought with only a few strokes of their pens. The less lines you need to deliver a message, the more understanding you have of what you're drawing. And this has nothing to do with style. Study how the old masters used to draw, like picasso, matisse.. or the more recent ones like al hirschfield, walt stanchfield.. or even the living masters that we have now, like ollie johnston, richard williams, glen keane.. they all know exactly where they need to put ther lines because of the overflowing understanding they have of what they're drawing.

Just like really good writers, illustrators only need a few lines (words) to be able to deliver whatever they need to say. Although of course, a complete illustration doesn't stop there. I'll get to that in a bit.

If i find myself drawing too many "unnecessary lines," i try to re-do the drawing all over again, because it means i don't know that thing i'm drawing well enough. Just like when you catch yourself saying the same stuff over and over again, but still not delivering a clear message, chances are, you don't really know what you're talking about.

So how do you learn how to get good strong lines? Learn your anatomy.

(*Note: Notice that i didn't use the word sentence, instead i used message. I think a line drawing is not always like a sentence where you have rules and grammar and all that, the most important thing is you convey a message, as clearly as possible. )

so in a nutshell,
LINES = BASIC INFORMATION

Laptop Life Drawings

So i had to borrow my friend's laptop for a couple of nights cause my computer's no good for work anymore and i got deadlines to catch. These are some real quick life drawings i did while on it. I really really need to learn how to get my values more accurately.

and i really really really want a laptop now.

EDIT*

Because the next few drawings also fit the same description, i decided to just add these to the same post.

I randomly bumped into one of my bestest best friends in high school earlier today! we hung out at starbucks after. This is her and her older sister.

Drawings From Today

Today i spent the whole day at starbucks, atc. I think i spent about 4 hours in there reading my book and doodling stuff. A great way to spend the day when there's nothing to do and nobody to talk to. Also, I just found out today that my favorite fancy blank notebook can actually work pretty well with watercolors. I think i'll be working with watercolors again for the next few posts.

professor slughorn.. i swear it was the cheap brushes' fault..

a safety scan of the initial inks before i painted them, in case i mess up with the watercolours later, which i did.

By the way, i also have tons of drawings and artworks that i didn't get to upload the past couple of weeks, maybe i'll upload some of them when i get the chance. My computer's starting to break apart and i really really need a new one to work with.

More Finches

I'm having fun drawing birds right now. It's also the first time in a long while that i'm using markers to draw. Flat tips are brilliant cause they let me work so much faster than ballpoints. There's more drawing and less retouching. I think i'm gonna start using these more often again.

With the birds i'll share..

Really sorry i haven't been uploading anything in a while. This is from a really boring rainy day today. Hopefully after finals week i'll get to upload a bit more often than this.

Dr. Sketchy's

Last thursday me and two of my friends went to Dr. Sketchy's for some life drawing. Had lots of fun! There weren't too many people who attended, but we kinda enjoyed it more cause we were free to move around the model to look for different angles on their poses. And it kinda felt like they had event just for us. Haha.

Warm Ups:
During the first few poses, it showed that the model was still very uncomfortable, so we had to edit her poses a little to sell them a bit more clearly.

this one had too many corrections so i redrew it on the left side.

But then after a while she got to give a lot of really good poses. And we also got to warm up with the 2 earlier minute poses, so the 5's and 10's felt a lot longer.

These are the 5's i think. It's the same pose, I just went around the model to see the angle from the back.

This is the very last pose for the night, a 15 or 20 minute pose i think? Something like that. Haha. The wax from the coloured pencil kept repelling the ink from the ballpoint, so it was a little irritating. But then i kinda like how the pink on top of the ballpoint ink looks purple-ish.

And this one on the bottom with the orange pencil was done by my awesome awesome friend, Carin, who i know is gonna be really big in the future, so i asked for her autograph so that i have something for her to remember me by when she's famous.

The end of the Dr. Sketchy's post!

The stuff here below are just some figure drawings from a few days before that.

bye!

More Fancy Sketchbook Sketches

So I think i've been drawing consistently everyday, if i'm not mistaken, more or less, on my nice new notebook this week. Here are some of them.

Drawings while watching t.v. The guy on the left was probably semi-inspired by a UFC fighter named Dan Hardy (whom i do not like, but i think has a nice mohawk.) The other guy's just a doodle.

An interesting street/alley from a manila trip with two of my photographer friends.

The old man sitting in front of me in church

A woman's face..

...some tree studies, and the ever present female figure drawings. til soon!

Sketches From Yesterday

I hung out at a coffee shop with a couple of friends yesterday..

And watched the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2) World Premiere live stream online when I got home! The event was glorious! I was chatting with friends the whole time and talking about every single person who arrives on the red carpet and nerding out and getting all emotional with their thank you speeches and such. Haha. It's okay, Harry Potter is probably the only thing i'd actually be proud to publicly nerd out to.

The interviewer man

I can't believe this is the last movie that's ever gonna come out ='(
